Languages of India
The officially used language of the country of India is Hindi and English. The Indian languages belong to other major linguistic families. The largest two are the Indo-European Languages & Indo-Aryan that is spoken by over 70% of the Indian people and other is Dravidian languages which over 22% of people using it.
In addition to this, some of the other languages that are spoken in India come from Tibeto-Burman and Austro-Asiatic linguistic families besides few language isolates.
As per the India census conducted in the year 2001, there are 29 languages that are used by a million of native speakers and 122 of them are spoken by 10,000. The three millennia of the language contact have led to the important mutual influence between the four family languages in South Asia and India. Moreover, there are two contact languages that play a vital role in the Indian history such as English and Persian.
As Hindi is the official language of the republic of India and English is also used for official purposes. However, many attempts are being made to increase the use of Hindi in official matters as well. Hindi, being an official language is spoken in the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Haryana and the capital of India, Delhi.
Bengali is other official language of the state of West Bengal, Tripura, Manipur and other north-east parts. Marathi is commonly used in Maharashtra. Punjabi is spoken full-fledged in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh. Tamil is the language of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry while Guajarati is an official language of the people of Gujarat. Malayam is mainly spoken in Kerala as well as Lakshadweep. Telugu is a language of Andhra Pradesh. And Oriya is used in Orissa, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Assamese is commonly used in Assam and north eastern states. Additionally, Urdu is used as a language in Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh. Last but nit the least; English is the co-official language of Indian Union and other states.
