Languages of Spain
When it comes to dominance and speakers in Spain, the most common languages that are used in the country of Spain is Spanish. Spanish is used by the people either as their first or their second language.
However, there are few regional languages that are used in different regions like:
- Basque is a language that is used in parts of Basque country as well as the Navarre. It is the single non Romance language used in mainland Spain.
- Galician is spoken in Galicia as well as adjacent western parts of the Castilla y León and Asturias
- Catalan is prominently spoken in Catalonia, Balearic Islands, adjacent eastern Aragon as a distinct variant.
Spanish is thus used as an official language all over the country. And other languages have official status in the respective regions. These languages are spread to be used in important book publishing’s and newspapers and media houses. While in the cases of Galician and Catalan, they are used mainly by the Galician as well as Catalan regional governments as well as local administrations. There are number of citizens in such regions who take their regional languages as primary and Spanish to be a secondary language.
Spanish has distinct dialects all over the country such as Andalusian and the Canarian dialects. Each of them has their sub varieties and few of these are a little closer to Spanish of America which they influence heavily at varied degrees depending totally on periods or regions, as per different as well as non-homogeneous migration or the colonization process.
